A Brief Introduction of the School of

Geography and Tourism of Chongqing Normal University

The School of Geography and Tourism of Chongqing Normal University was initially established in 1954. Founded the Department of Tourism in 1995. In 1998, it was approved by the Chongqing Municipal Education Commission to establish the Chongqing Tourism College. In 2004, Chongqing Normal University established the College of Geographical Science and the College of Tourism, and in 2010, the two colleges were merged into the School of Geography and Tourism. In 2021, it was approved to establish a demonstration modern industry college in Chongqing's ordinary undergraduate universities - the College of Modern Smart Tourism Industry.

The college now has multiple undergraduate majors, including Geographical Science, Geographic Information Science, Tourism Management (including vocational majors those are corresponding to this major), Hotel Management, Urban and Rural Planning, Aviation Service Arts and Management, and a total of over 2000 full-time undergraduate students. Among these majors, the specialty of Geographical Science is a national first-class undergraduate specialty construction site, and a characteristic specialty under the “Three Specials Action Plan” of the “Characteristic Major, Characteristic Discipline, and Characteristic School” for the universities in Changing. The Tourism Management specialty of our college is a national first-class undergraduate specialty construction site and a national characteristic specialty. It has launched segmented talent cultivation project classes that respectively cover the “3+2” academic years and the “3+4”academic years. The major of Hotel Management in our school has launched 121 Sino-American Joint Talent Training Program program classes. This college is a second-level college that has been recognized by Chongqing City and has been transformed into an application-oriented one. It has established a specialties group of Chongqing's characteristic disciplines such as “Applied Geographical Science and Tourism Management”. The college has a first-class discipline in Geography and an academic master's degree authorization center in Tourism Management. It has four professional master's programs, namely, Tourism Management, subject teaching (specifically, Geography), vocational and technical education (specifically, Tourism Service), as well Resources and Environment. With over 480 graduate students, it is a supporting unit under the key vocational teacher training base of the Ministry of Education.It is also an important base for cultivating geographical and tourism talents in the southwest region.

The college has two key laboratories in Chongqing, one key laboratory affiliated to the universities in Chongqing, one collaborative innovation center exclusive to Chongqing in 2011, one field science observation station exclusive to Chongqing, and one experimental teaching demonstration center exclusive to Chongqing. Meanwhile, the college has established the national research units such as the Southwest Mountain Branch of the National Earth System Science Data Center, the Yangtze River Tourism Research Base of the Chinese Academy of Tourism, and has one Chongqing Talent and Innovation and Entrepreneurship Demonstration Team, two Chongqing's exclusive university innovation teams, and one Chongqing's exclusive university philosophy and social science collaborative innovation team. It also hosted Geography Education, which was awarded the title of National Excellent Geography Journal.

The college currently has 107 faculty members, including 89 full-time teachers, 23 with senior professional titles, 36 with deputy senior professional titles, and 59 faculty members with doctoral degrees. Currently, our college has one national level talent for the New Century Ten Million Talents Project, one outstanding talent for the New Century from the Ministry of Education, two experts enjoying special subsidies from the State Council, seven academic and technical leaders and reserve candidates in Chongqing, two outstanding and young talents in Chongqing, two winners of the Provincial and Ministerial Outstanding Youth Fund Project, and nine young and middle-aged backbone teachers in exclusive universities in Chongqing.

Our college has always attached great importance to discipline construction. Our Geography and Tourism Management major is a key discipline in Chongqing during the “14th Five Year Plan”period. Our college has established a smart ecotourism Chongqing artificial intelligence, as well as a disciplinary group. Our college has long conducted scientific research and social services around the Three Gorges Reservoir Area and Chongqing's resource environment and ecological construction, tourism development and management, urban and rural residential environment and land use, and has achieved fruitful academic achievements and good social benefits. Since 2018, our college has undertaken a total of 26 projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Social Science Foundation, and the National Basic Science and Technology Special Program. Our college has undertaken 156 provincial and ministerial level projects, including the Chongqing Outstanding Youth Fund, the Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Sciences Program. The college has received 10 scientific research awards at the provincial and ministerial levels, and 17 invention patents and utility models. The faculty and staff of our college have published a total of 13 monographs and over 470 papers, of which 97 are included in SCI/SSCI level journals.

The college has a total of 12000 square meters of experimental teaching and scientific research facilities. The college has more than 200 high-end scientific research equipment, including three-dimensional laser scanners, inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometers, flow injection analyzers, gas chromatography, atomic fluorescence spectrometers, atomic absorption spectrometers, ion chromatographs, spectral radiometers, TOC analyzers, fully automatic Kjeldahl nitrogen determiners, astrographs, and other instruments, with a total value of over 25 million yuan.
